Have a question that isn’t listed? Email our team at contact.us@rockfordpromise.org and we’d be happy to help!

Q: When can students apply for Rockford Promise scholarships?
A: Applications are open on October 1, 2025 and close at 5 pm CT on February 5, 2026.

Q: What college can a student attend on a Rockford Promise scholarship?
A: We currently offer scholarships to Northern Illinois University, Rockford University, and Rock Valley College for high school seniors, and to Saint Anthony College of Nursing to both high school students as well as current college students who meet current college credit requirements for enrollment. We also offer a scholarship for transfer program students from Rock Valley College to Northern Illinois University.

Q: Are Rockford Promise scholarships limited to any field of study or major?
A: Students are able to seek a degree or certification in any program offered by the college they are attending. Rockford Promise covers any tuition financial gap for 4 years or up to a bachelor’s degree at Northern Illinois University and Rockford University, and 3 years or 64 credits at Rock Valley College, whichever comes first.

Q: How many scholarships are available?
A: NIU: All qualified applicants receive offers.

RU: All qualified applicants residing within city limits; limited/competitive* scholarships available to non-city residents who attend RPS205 all four years.

RVC: Scholarship availability is limited/competitive*.

SACN: Scholarship availability is limited/competitive*.

Q: Does a student have to commit to coming back to Rockford after graduation?
A: We believe the Rockford region offers incredible opportunities for the next generation. Rockford Promise connects Scholars with mentors, internships, and networking that help them launch meaningful careers here. While students don’t have to return after graduation, we encourage them to build their future in Rockford and make a lasting impact.

Q: My student goes to Rockford Public Schools (RPS) but does not live in the city limits. Can they still apply?
A: Yes! As long as your student has gone to RPS205 all four years of high school (and meets all other eligibility requirements), they should apply for our Rock Valley College scholarship as well as the competitive* scholarship process for Rockford University.

Q: How do I know if I live in the Rockford city limits.
A: Click on this link to determine if you live within the city limits. Applicants to Northern Illinois University and Rockford University must be residents of Rockford.

Q: What does a Rockford Promise scholarship cover?
A: Rockford Promise scholarships cover all tuition costs remaining after other qualifying financial aid is applied. The scholarship does not cover room and board, books, or other incurred costs.
From time to time, additional opportunities such as housing grants may become available, and Rockford Promise will notify Scholars when funding is offered through donor support.

*Note: competitive means there are limited scholarships available, so it is a competitive process to earn one.
