More Than a Scholarship
For many of our Scholars, especially those who are the first in their families to go to college, financial barriers are only part of the challenge. That’s why we go beyond tuition support. We provide personalized guidance and wraparound services to help students thrive from their first day on campus to the moment they earn their degree and step into rewarding careers, often right here in our community.

Our VISION
We’re working to realize Rockford Promise’s full potential by reaching fully funded status, where every qualified graduate of Rockford Public School District 205 or partner private schools has a clear path to the college or career training program of their choice.
Our history
In 2006, retired physician Dr. John McHugh learned about the transformative impact of the Kalamazoo Promise, a program in Kalamazoo, Michigan that provides college scholarships to local students. Inspired by the idea, Dr. McHugh brought together a group of community leaders to create a similar opportunity in Rockford. Within weeks, they formed the first Board of Directors, filed articles of incorporation, and began raising money to turn the vision of Rockford Promise into reality.
After years of fundraising and advocacy, Rockford Promise awarded its first five full-tuition scholarships. Thanks to the tireless efforts of volunteers, that number continued to grow year after year. In 2021, the City of Rockford made a multi-year commitment that expanded the program to hundreds of qualified scholars annually.
Today, our staff, volunteers, partners, and donors remain committed to one shared goal of building a fully-funded Promise program that continues to change lives and strengthen our community.
